Do you have a “Bouncy Stage Deck Platform” issue?
Over time, some Portable Stage Deck Platforms may start to feel bouncy or spongy underfoot. This issue can be puzzling, especially when it only affects a few platforms out of many.
In 2016, the experts at NexGen Staging identified the cause and solution for this problem. Here’s what they found:
Why does this happen?
Most portable stage platforms are constructed using a reinforced sandwich panel bonded within an aluminium frame for strength and lightness. The “spongy deck” issue typically arises due to two main factors:
1. Exposure to direct heat (e.g., from a radiator or intense sunlight).
2. Liquid spillage or moisture build-up on the edges.
These conditions can break down the glue bond between the sandwich panel and the frame edge, especially on the underside of the panel. When this bond weakens, the platform can become bouncy because the weight is no longer evenly distributed, causing the unbonded edges to give way slightly.
How to fix it:
To restore stability to your stage deck platforms, follow these steps:
Materials Needed:
- • Decorator scrapers or spatulas
- • PVA or strong wood bonding glue
- • Sauce bottle applicator with a fine tube end
Repair Steps:
- Identify the edges on the underside of the deck platform that need attention.
Stand the platform vertically on one edge.
Use a scraper or flat blade knife to pry open the plywood from the frame edge on the underside.
Generously apply glue into the recess, ensuring good coverage along the edge and into the opening.
Wipe off any excess glue from the outside.
Repeat the process for any other affected edges.
Clamp the deck together with wood clamps or place a heavy weight on the upside-down deck platform to secure the bond.
Leave it to dry for up to 72 hours.
By following these steps, you can easily fix your spongy deck platforms in approximately 30 minutes, ensuring a stable and secure surface.
